10th Bias Attack in Port Richmond, Staten Island

Staten Island, New York August 1 2010 - According to the police reports, a 17-year-old Mexican boy was assaulted by two teenagers when he was returning after working at Manhattan restaurant at 2:30 in the morning. Authorities have said that this is the 10th biased case on the Staten Island.

Police have stated that these two teens robbed $10 from this Mexican boy and then beat him up after shouting anti-Mexican statements. The victim who suffered minor injuries was taken to Richmond University Medical Centre for treatment.

At the time of Spanish language mass at St. Mary of the Assumption in Port Richmond, Reverend Hernan Paredes requested the Mexican worshippers to be vociferous against racially inspired acts of violence.

He said that we should fearlessly condemn all wicked acts and be group of people organized well enough against crimes, as we are immigrants.

New York City police Department has strengthened their presence in the area because of the spike in racially inspired violence, besides deputing many Mexican born police officers to work together with the community.

One of the residents namely Emmanual Martinez expressed his view that people are terrified to even go out of their house with the fear of being attacked. Another resident
Jennifer Martinez felt that depressed and fearful because of the hatred.
In spite of additional police patrols, immigrant community leaders still worry about the upward trend of attacks.
Terry Troia of Project Hospitality feels that the latest attack is not only alarming as an act of mere violence but the defiance shown towards a community which is making all efforts to build bridges and make a secure area. The last attack against a minor has set a new trend of attacks in this area.

Port Richmond resident Nick Estevez said that there are elements on both sides who are neither courteous nor play a civilized role in society causing difficulties to others

While no arrests have been made in the last attack, six people have been arrested until now in connection with three attacks out of a series of ten-hate crime since April.

Man Attacked and Stabbed in Brooklyn, New York

Brooklyn, New Yor, August 2nd 2010 - According to police and eyewitnesses, on Sunday, 12:10 a.m. in the Fifth Ave. near 12th St. in Park Slope, Brooklyn, a gang of 20 people beat up a man to death with tire iron, stabbed and injured the other. Both the men were attacked on the either side of the avenue.

The police did not disclose the name of the deceased person but said that he was 22-year old man. The other injured person who was 20 years of age was taken to the Lutheran Hospital where his condition remained stable.

The gang of 20 people attacked the victims with tire irons, crowbars, and remains of glasses pieces and ran away.

A witness had earlier seen one of the victims with baseball bat at the fifth Ave. near 10th street whose face was splashed with blood.

Wedding Photographer Accidently Shot Dead at Wedding Party

New York - July 27th 2010 - A 45-year-old marriage photographer named Calogero Scimea was inadvertently killed in Sicily by a gunshot when he made the prospective bride Valentina Anitra, 22, and groom Ignazio Licodia, 25 pose for a photograph using rifles as props. The wedding party was horrified as one of the rifles being used as props went off hitting the photographer on his head killing him on the spot.

The would-be couple postponed the wedding due to pending police investigation. Col. Teo Luzi spokesperson of the Palermo police informed that the deceased photographer was a replacement since the original photographer had fallen sick and could not be present.
Possession of rifles is legally permitted in this picturesque island of Italy, which is famous for Mafia activities. They also have a tradition of firing guns during family celebrations and injuries to partygoers are not very uncommon.

Licodia’s parents have been tight lipped about the incident, which may result in criminal charges against them as the incident occurred at their residence prior to leaving for the local church.
The police are trying to figure out, if the rifle was fired while being handled by the photographer or when it was given to them. However, no one is forthcoming on this.

Brooklyn, New York 27 Jul 2010 - NYC police have detained two people who were involved in a gun-firing incident that resulted in an injury of a 19-month old girl in her leg.

The baby who was injured on her right leg is now in a stable condition. Police said that the duos were gunning for person they had tried to rob previously and hit the toddler who was close by.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that the 17-year-old and a 24-year-old suspects were detained on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident at Long Island

A motorcyclist died on the spot when his motorcycle crashed into the building on Long Island.

Suffolk County police have said that they are investigating the accident that happened in Amityville at approximately 8 p.m on July 27, 2010.

Long Island, NY - July 27, 2010 - Police have said that 24-year-old Jorge Fernandez, of Copiague, was riding a 2003 Kawasaki motorcycle on the east of Dixon Avenue when the bike left the roadway and hit the building at 175 Dixon Ave. Fernandez was declared dead at the accident spot.

The bike was confiscated for a examination.

Franklin Square, NY - The accident that involved three-vehicles causing injury to a little girl has led to an arrest of the driver on suspicion of DWI.

The accident occurred at 820 Hempstead Turnpike soon after 3:00 p.m on July 27, 2010.

Police said the alleged drunk driver was driving the SUV that was heading towards the westbound on Hempstead Turnpike. A green car with the family of five people was heading in the opposite direction. The SUV driver wanted to take a left turn on Claflin but banged into the car.

The car banged the pole and threw a 4-year old girl out of the rear window. She fell close to parking area. Officials have confirmed that her injuries are not serious.

Autistic Man from New York Died in Van

New York, NY July 27, 2010 - An autistic man was found dead in a van as he was left alone in the scorching heat.

He was later on identified as 20-year-old Brian Nevins who hailed from New York. This incident happened outside a residential home in Langhorne, Pennsylvania wherein people having different disabilities are taken care of.

Middletown Township police have said that Nevins was left unaccompanied for five hours inside the van on the Woods Services campus after a trip to Sesame Place.

Nevins was the son of a retired New York City police officer who lived in Queens earlier. The Bucks County coroner has said that the death was due to hypothermia.

The driver was immediately suspended but no charges have been filed against him as the investigation was still going on.

Man crushed to death in New York office building's Trash compactor

(NEW YORK, N.Y - July 25th, 2010) - John Adams, 67 years a maintenance man was crushed to death after falling into a trash compactor in the famous western New York office building. According to police officials, nobody realized this for several weeks and kept searching for him. His family members and authorities reported a missing case in the police station. They even offered a reward of $1500 for any information about him. After several weeks, through the surveillance camera, it was discovered that he had tripped and fallen into the compactor and the mechanism “prevented him from being able to escape and made it impossible for co-workers or others to realize what had occurred,” Niagara Falls, N.Y. police stated in a release.

Even his co-workers did not know about this incident. This incident took place on the 4th of July when Adams was picking the garbage from one of the buildings at Niagara. The building owners and his family members were clueless about his whereabouts. His Sister Evie Shepherd questioned the police as to why they had seen the videotapes nearly after three weeks of the incident. For this, the police replied that they had reviewed the video earlier but could not get conclusive evidence. Since the initial police search had not found any definite evidence of Adams’ remains, the building president Tony Farina did not review the video until Friday night.

( New York, NY 2010-07-25 ) Farina expressed his condolence to John’s family and said that he never expected things would end so terribly. The building is situated close to the New York foot of the Rainbow Bridge that connects U.S. and Canada downstream from Niagara Falls.

John had been working there for nearly five years and he slipped inside the compactor while trying to get back a fallen trash bin. Adams is now survived by five grown children and was known to always lookout for odd jobs.

Bronx, NY Tornado

Bronx, NY, July 26, 2010 - The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in the Riverdale section of the Bronx Sunday during a powerful thunderstorm that knocked down dozens of trees and damaged several cars and buildings.

A National Weather Service storm damage team and the New York City Office of Emergency Management surveyed the damage Monday and determined that it is consisted with an EF1 tornado.

The inspectors saw tornado damage along a path of about sixth-tenths of a mile from the Hebrew Home for the Aged on Palisades Avenue, according to the NWS. The tornado proceeded in a southeasterly direction to about the intersection of West 254th Street and Riverdale Avenue, officials said.

The tornado with 100 mph winds touched down in the area at about 2:50 p.m. and lasted for about 10 minutes.

The team also confirmed straight-line wind damage consistent with a microburst, officials said.

After hitting the Bronx, the storm system moved across the Long Island Sound and swept into Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The storm knocked out power to thousands of homes in the Bronx as well as on Long Island.

A sailor fell overboard on the Long Island Sound during the storm on Sunday and was still missing Monday, the Coast Guard said.

NYCTA ordered to pay $7.5m jury verdict

Two women were riding in a motor vehicle in Brooklyn when a New York City Transit Authority bus disregarded a red light and collided into their car.

At trial, a jury found the NYCTA liable and awarded one woman $7.25 million and the other $250,000.

NYC Transit plans to appeal the verdict.
